Three majors down, one to go. The final major of the 2024 professional golf season will be the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon in South Ayrshire, Scotland on July 18-21. 2024 Open Championship odds: Scottie Scheffler favored to win his second major
When the best players in the world arrive at Royal Troon in Scotland in a few weeks, the top of the odds board is going to feature some familiar names.
Despite his T41 finish at Pinehurst in the U.S. Open a few weeks ago, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (+410) is at the head of the table entering the British Open. Then it’s world No. 2 and 2014 Open champion Rory McIlroy (+800), fresh off perhaps the most devastating major close call in his career at the U.S. Open.
U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (+1200), PGA Champion Xander Schauffele (+1400), Ludvig Aberg (+1600), Collin Morikawa (+2000) and Viktor Hovland (+2000) are the next five names on the list at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Of those names, Morikawa is the only previous Open champion, but that could change by the end of the weekend at Troon. Scroll down a bit and you’ll find that 2023 winner Brian Harman can be found at +6000 to repeat as Champion Golfer of the Year.
It’s perfectly reasonable to wonder where McIlroy’s head is at after the heartbreaking loss at Pinehurst. After making over 100 feet worth of putts throughout the round, McIlroy’s flatstick went cold at the worst possible time and it cost him the U.S. Open. Will he be able to turn around and win a major for the first time in 10 years after such a defeat?
All we can say for Rory at this point is that he continues to will himself back into competing for major titles, even after coming up just short on many occasions. He came in second at the 2023 U.S. Open and bounced back to have a two-shot lead with five to play in 2024.
While it’s fair to wonder whether McIlroy will finish the job, his performances at the Open Championship speak for themselves. He won in 2014, his second of seven top-five finishes, including at Royal Troon in 2016.
If you’re looking outside of the top-10 names on the board, you can do much worse than a Tyrrell Hatton, a European player with the ability to play a links-style course and some history at Royal Troon.
He was recently as high as +4000 at FanDuel Sportsbook but the market has caught on and he’s already down to +3000 as his highest price (Caesars). There is always value to shopping around for the best price.
Hatton has four top-20 finishes at The Open, with his best ever being T5 at Royal Troon in 2016 following a 68 on Sunday. As a LIV player, Hatton earned a victory in Nashville last week. And both Brooks Koepka and DeChambeau have proven you can jump back into ultra-competitive golf and win from LIV.
The Englishman finished inside the top 10 at The Masters and until blowing up on Sunday at Pinehurst, was having a very solid U.S. Open.
If you are looking for a big-time dark horse that may net you a great payout if it hits, look no further than 26-year-old Korean Sungjae Im.
While Sungjae’s resume wouldn’t make you think he’d light up Royal Troon at first glance, there is value in the odds and reason to believe he can outperform his position on the odds board by a great deal.
Sungjae was T20 last year at Royal Liverpool and will once again play in the Scottish Open before heading to Royal Troon, so we can expect the same level of preparation for the challenges posed by a European links-style course.
While his performance in majors this season has not been great, Im is in fine form overall following a T3 at the Travelers. Before the U.S. Open, he was T8 at The Memorial and T9 at Colonial the week before.
