Euro 2024 Round of 16 picks: Best bets for France vs. Belgium, Portugal vs. Slovenia
On Monday, France faces Belgium in a matchup between two of the top three countries in FIFA’s world rankings. Later on, Cristiano Ronaldo will lead his side into a matchup against a resilient Slovenia team that is yet to lose at the tournament.
The light is dimming on Belgium’s chances of fulfilling the potential of what was dubbed its golden generation. They lost to Slovakia and tied with Ukraine in the Group Stage to barely sneak into the Round of 16 as the second-place finisher in a group that finished with four teams at four points.
The French will be on high alert after they were shocked by Switzerland in the Round of 16 in the last Euros. They drew their last two matches against Poland and the Netherlands but are still in better form than their neighbors and have better players in nearly every area.
Belgium doesn’t have the pace in defense to cope with France’s attack, and Romelu Lukaku has not laced up his shooting boots. Kevin De Bruyne can only do so much in the midfield and may be in line for an early exit in one of his last international competitions as a true megastar.
Portugal suffered an unexpected 2-0 loss to Georgia in its final match of the Group Stage to put a disappointing end to the first portion of the competition. Their five goals scored are tied for the third-most at the tournament, and they’re still heavily favored to advance.
Slovenia knows that its chance to progress in the tournament does not come from a potent attack, but from resolute defense and winning within the margins. They played all three teams in the Group Stage to a draw despite never achieving 40% possession and won’t mind sitting off the ball.
Portugal likely has too much talent to bow out of the tournament here, but Slovenia will play them tough and frustrate them by putting 11 men behind the ball, giving them a great chance to keep it close.
