HAMILTON — Prior to the Bitterroot River turning patriotic colors this Independence Day, extensive planning takes place behind the scenes to ensure that community events go off without a hitch.
“We inspect all of our electronic firing equipment and clean the tubes. We thoroughly clean everything from previous years, remove any debris from the wires, and then carefully place the E-match on the shells,” explained Bubba Riley, Fireworks Coordinator.
Riley is tasked with preparing 20,000 dollars worth of fireworks for the display. “This year, we have 20,000 dollars allocated for the city’s show,” he stated, showcasing rows of fireworks.
Preparations for Hamilton’s Fourth of July involve a great deal of hands-on work, not just for the fireworks teams.
“We are the venue for them,” said Melissa Saville, Ravalli County Fairgrounds Manager. “We ensure they have all necessary facilities for the best fireworks show they can deliver.”
Ravalli County Fairgrounds crews are busy getting the grounds prepared for one of the biggest celebrations of the year.
“It really makes me proud of our community coming together. The fair staff sets up picnic tables, garbage cans, and ensures clean, stocked restrooms, knowing that this event could draw thousands of people,” Saville explained.
Once the grand finale concludes, the City of Hamilton begins planning for the following year.
“The mayor is already looking ahead to next year, saving funds and working with contractors to ensure seamless planning,” remarked Saville.
However, Hamilton is not the only town showcasing a spectacular fireworks display. The Florence Volunteer Fire Department is also involved.
“We initiate our planning about two to three months in advance by reaching out to local businesses for donations. The more funds we raise, the bigger and better fireworks show we can organize,” shared Peter Metzger, Assistant Chief of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department.
While it may seem unconventional for a fire department to host a fireworks show, Metzger emphasized the safety benefits. With more people attending the event, they receive fewer emergency calls. “Bringing the community together has been effective in fire prevention,” he noted.
Additionally, the aim is to unite the town for a night of enjoyment.
“We take pleasure in creating that small-town community atmosphere in Florence. Bringing everyone together for fun and enjoyment is really rewarding,” said Metzger.
