HELENA, Mont. – The Headwaters Hub, Montana’s tech hub, has recently received $41 million for expansion after nearly two years of operation.
The focus of the Headwaters Hub is on technological innovation, particularly in photonic sensing systems that are used in various aspects of daily life, such as in cell phone cameras, car sensors, agricultural equipment, and military devices.

The funding of over $40 million comes from the Chips and Sciences Act, a congressional initiative aimed at advancing technology in the United States and supporting rural development.

Dr. Tim Vanhekken, representing Headwaters Hub, highlighted Montana’s position as one of the top five locations for optics and photonics technologies and expressed how this funding will further enhance the state’s technological progress.

The funding will be utilized for various purposes, including enhancing educational and training opportunities at universities, establishing final stage testing facilities, investing in agricultural technology for crop abnormality detection, and prioritizing military technology for object detection capabilities.

This funding will be put into action immediately to support the expansion efforts of the Headwaters Hub.
