PHOENIX (AP) — Ron Falk experienced life-changing injuries a year ago after collapsing from heat stroke outside a Phoenix convenience store. He lost his right leg, had extensive skin grafting on the left one, and is still in recovery. Now wheelchair-bound, he’s receiving care at a medical respite center while undergoing physical therapy and treatment for a bacterial infection in his right leg.
The extreme heat in Phoenix has been breaking records, with temperatures reaching dangerous levels, especially for vulnerable populations like children, older adults, and the homeless. Sizzling sidewalks and playgrounds pose risks for surface burns, with many individuals being hospitalized due to contact burns caused by touching surfaces heated to 180 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
Hospitals like Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix have seen a significant increase in patients with surface burns during the summer months, with the 2021 heat wave being particularly severe. The center has had to implement new protocols to treat heat-related injuries, like submerging patients in ice to lower body temperature quickly.
Recovery from surface burns can be lengthy and often involves multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation. Victims like Bob Woolley, who suffered extensive burns after falling onto hot surfaces, have faced excruciating pain and a challenging road to recovery.
It’s not just adults who are affected—children are also vulnerable to surface burns, often from walking barefoot on hot surfaces or touching scorching playground equipment. Efforts to mitigate these risks include providing shade at playgrounds, using cooler ground coverings, and educating the public on the dangers of hot surfaces.
As the summer heat continues to pose risks for surface burns, it’s important for individuals to take precautions, especially when outdoors. Stay cool, hydrated, and avoid hot surfaces to prevent heat-related injuries.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Ron Falk remains hopeful for the future, determined to regain some semblance of his old life. He is a testament to resilience in the face of adversity.
