HELENA — Safety around the water is crucial in light of recent drownings in Montana. “If you think someone is in trouble, don’t hesitate to call 911. We would rather have a canceled call than a delayed response,” emphasizes Lewis And Clark County Search and Rescue Samie Robinson.
There have been five confirmed drownings in Montana recently. “The number one thing people can do is wear life jackets. The water can be unpredictable, so wearing a life jacket is essential for safety,” advises Robinson.
Montana’s weather can change rapidly, with afternoon storms bringing lightning, thunder, and strong winds. “Keep an eye on the afternoon weather as thunderstorms can be surprising and dangerous,” warns Robinson.
Boaters should have a designated driver and avoid drinking while out on the water. It’s important to inform someone of your plans and not to jump into cold water when fatigued or overheated, as it can shock your system.
“Encourage everyone to wear life jackets, be safe, and have fun. We want our community to stay safe and return home at the end of the day,” concludes Robinson.
