HELENA — The federal government has announced over $500 million in grants to support “tech hubs” across the country, including one in western Montana.
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration revealed that the Headwaters Tech Hub is slated to receive approximately $41 million, with the final grant amount to be determined in the coming months.
Headwaters Hub, spearheaded by Accelerate Montana and based in Missoula and Bozeman, with participation from Kalispell and Butte, is dedicated to the “smart photonic sensing” sector, which aids automated monitoring systems in various fields such as agriculture, construction, disaster prevention, and defense.
Montana officials state that the state currently has more than 1,000 jobs in the photonics industry, with a projected increase to 6,000 jobs within a decade. The new grant will be used for workforce training, enhancing educational opportunities, attracting Native and rural students, and supporting technology testing.
The Tech Hub program, established by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, aims to promote innovation and employment in high-tech industries. Last year, the Biden administration announced 32 hubs, including Headwaters. This recent funding allocation is for 12 of these hubs.
Sen. Steve Daines co-sponsored the CHIPS and Science Act in Congress, and both Sen. Daines and Sen. Jon Tester endorsed it. They both expressed their excitement about the grant announcement on Tuesday.
“Montana is at the forefront of tech innovation, which will boost job creation and economic growth, helping us stay competitive globally,” stated Daines. “I am thankful to contribute to Montana’s progress in research, development, and job creation that will enhance national security and global competitiveness.”
“Montana has the capacity to lead the nation in technological advancement, ensuring America’s ability to outperform countries like China,” said Tester. “I worked hard to secure this significant $41 million investment for the Headwaters Tech Hub, advocating for the potential of rural America. Reviving job opportunities in the U.S., securing our supply chains, and advancing next-gen technology begins with investments in the Treasure State, and I pledge to collaborate with the Headwaters team to ensure they have the necessary resources for success.”
