Due to a reader’s inquiry about hard sugar-free candy without sugar alcohols for diabetes and dry mouth, I initially could not find any such products.
However, Mary O. from Richmond, Virginia, shared information about a sugar-free candy made with stevia, a sweetener that does not contain sugar or sugar alcohols.
Upon examining the Nutrition Facts label of this product, it appeared to have zero sugar alcohol content. But, the ingredient list revealed isomalt, a sugar alcohol, as the first ingredient.
This discrepancy is due to FDA regulations stating that if a food product contains less than half a gram of sugar alcohol per serving, it can be labeled as zero.

There is also a concern raised by Jeanne G. from St. Louis about the toxicity of sugar alcohols like xylitol to dogs, as they can cause symptoms such as weakness and seizures if ingested.
While xylitol is safe for humans and can help reduce bacteria in the mouth, high levels in the blood have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke in some studies.
Lastly, Ann from Monterey, California, suggests frozen grapes as a potential snack for dry mouth and sugar reduction, as they provide a crunchy texture like popsicles and are naturally sweet.
Dental experts recommend grapes as a healthy snack despite containing natural sugars.
