The Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest began, according to local legend, in 1916 and has continued on the corner of Surf and Stillwell in Coney Island since 1972.
Joey Chestnut, the greatest competitive eater in history, has won the competition eight years running but won’t be competing in this year’s event on the men’s side. That means the competition is wide open for the rest of the field.

In the past, Geoffrey Esper has found himself a distant second to the insane Joey Chestnut odds we see year after year. But this time, he’s at the top of the board after eating 49 dogs and buns a year ago on July 4.
Per Major League Eating, he is the 2017 and 2019 Hooters wing-eating Champion and the champion of the Fortune Bay Indian Taco and the Jack’s Donuts Donut Holes. In 2023, Esper secured his third straight strawberry shortcake eating record by downing 21 pounds of the treat in eight minutes.
Esper’s over/under for hot dog props is 49.5 (-130 for the over) and he is a -9.5 hot dog favorite over Miki Sudo, the favorite in the women’s competition.

When it comes to the women’s hot dog eating world record, Miki Sudo set the most recent one after downing 48.5 hot dogs and buns in 2020. She has won every Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest she has competed in since 2014 and is a huge favorite once again:
At DraftKings, Sudo has a total set at 40.5 (Over +125, Under -155) for the 2024 competition. Mayoi Ebihara, second on the odds board, has a total at 34.5 hot dogs and buns.

2024 Hot dog best bets: Miki Sudo and Geoffrey Esper picks for July 4
There’s no better time for Geoffrey Esper to grab the Mustard Belt, and he’s favored to do so at DraftKings and BetMGM at around -115. Esper’s personal best is 51 dogs and buns and if he gets to that mark, there’s a good shot James Webb and Nick Wehry are unable to keep up.
This is an interesting wager because it crosses over the men’s’ and women’s competitions and provides somewhat of a rooting interest in both. While it’s expected Esper will certainly eat more dogs and buns than Miki Sudo, we’ve got reason to think it will stay within 10 on Thursday.
In 2023, Esper beat Sudo by 9.5 dogs and buns and in 2022, Esper ate 47.5 while Sudo put up 40. In 2020, Sudo set a world record with 48.5 dogs and buns and in 2021, Esper tied his personal best with 51.
All of this is to say, it should be a close one, but we’re taking Sudo to stay within double digits yet again. Esper’s total is set at 49.5, while Sudo’s is at 40.5 at DraftKings going into Thursday’s competition.
Patrick Bertoletti is one of the under-the-radar picks for this competition, but we think his hot dog total is set a bit too high at 45.5 at DraftKings.
