New releases
‘MaXXXine’
Ti West and Mia Goth bring the very good, very sexy and very bloody X Trilogy to the end. There’s a killer on the prowl in 1980s Hollywood, and the trail of blood leads right back to an adult film actress on the verge of her big break. I hope all this murder gets resolved before we get to the climax. Rated R. Stars the iconic Mia Goth, Halsey and Michelle Monaghan.
‘Kinds of Kindness’
Speaking of quick turnarounds between arthouse filmmakers and talented stars, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, fresh off a big night at this year’s Academy Awards, return with a new film with three interconnecting storylines about faith, love, loss and helicopter rescues. Rated R. Also stars Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau and Willem Dafoe.

‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968)
After showing one of Kubrick’s early films last month, we now jump forward to the distant year of 2001, where a crew of astronauts find themselves facing down a killer computer and more symbolism than you can shake a monolith at. Rated G, but the 1968 version of the G rating. Stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Playing Wednesday, July 10, and Saturday, July 13, presented in a new restoration of the film, which was overseen by Christopher Nolan (who we’ll be seeing next week). And, for the record, if Stanley Kubrick had faked the moon landing footage, there wouldn’t be any mistakes in it.
