MISSOULA β The Missoula County Fairgrounds has been undergoing significant renovations recently, allowing fairgoers to explore the entire fairgrounds for the first time.
Crews have been busy constructing new grandstands and completing the garden pavilion, which will soon feature a butterfly exhibit.
The decision was made to repurpose the old aluminum bleachers to minimize waste and preserve some of the old grandstands’ charm in the new structures.
Fairgrounds officials sought inspiration from top fair grandstands nationwide, evident in the impressive new design.
βWhen the cool breeze hits you from the shaded area and flows through the stadium, especially at the top standing concourse β that’s the place to be,β said Missoula County Fairgrounds events and operations manager Billie Ayers.
Along with the renovations, fairgrounds officials have been making efforts to address various issues, including waste reduction at the fair.
Last year, 74% of all waste was diverted from landfills, largely due to the help of volunteers and the community. Compost bins, recycling bins, and trash bins were provided.
Ayers mentioned that by the third day of last year’s Western Montana Fair, the community had grasped the waste sorting concept, resulting in minimal work for volunteers.
Fairgrounds officials are also working on bridging the gap between urban and rural communities by highlighting their shared values and encouraging everyone to explore all the fair has to offer.
Making the fair free of charge aims to bring people from both communities together. Fairgoers can come and go as they please and are allowed to bring outside food but not alcohol.
