SPOKANE, Wash. — The Billings Scarlets won one and lost one Friday during play at the Spokane Wood Bat Classic, dropping their opener to a Canadian team before storming back to a big win against a squad from the host city.
The Scarlets were shutout in their early game against the Webber (Canada) Wildcats by a 2-0 margin, but returned for their second game of the day to roll past the Spokane Bandits by a 14-1 scoreline.
Against Webber, despite a fine pitching performance on the mound by Nolan Berkram (six innings, two earned runs from seven hits, nine strikeouts allowed), Billings was unable to find home plate as it only tallied four hits, none of which went for extra bases.
Kyler Northrop, Nathan McDonald, Jakob Wilcox, and Kade Vatnsdal were the only Scarlets to record hits against the Wildcats, who picked up both of their runs in the fourth inning.

The Scarlets’ second game of the day, meanwhile, saw them have no problems swinging the bat as they mercy-ruled Spokane thanks to a 10-hit display across just three innings.
Northrop and Vatnsdal each had three RBIs to lead Billings while Wilcox and Brady Randall each added two themselves, helping spur a 10-run second inning for Billings that allowed it to pull away.
Jaxon Meyer got the start on the mound and allowed just three hits and one unearned run across four innings, striking out six.
The Scarlets’ next opponent in Spokane is to be determined, with the game set for Sunday.
