The Scripps News Toll-Free Viewer Hotline allows our audience to provide feedback on our coverage. The weekly Viewer Spotlight gives us the opportunity to address some of those concerns.
Recently, some of you have been asking, “Where’s the good news?”
For example, Rhonda mentioned, “The world can be harsh and negative, but there are moments of positivity that we need to focus on. A dose of sunshine would be greatly appreciated.”
There’s also a question on our YouTube page requesting, “Have you thought about featuring news stories that aren’t overwhelmingly negative? Not all news is bad…”
They are not alone.
A survey conducted in 2024 by Reuters Institute and The University of Oxford reveals that 39% of respondents worldwide sometimes or often avoid the news, up from 29% in 2017.

Many find the news depressing and are tired of hearing about ongoing conflicts like those in Ukraine and Gaza.
While we acknowledge the importance of these stories, we understand that constant coverage of unresolved issues can leave viewers feeling helpless.
That’s why we make an effort to showcase stories with positive outcomes, solutions, and individuals making a difference.

Additionally, there’s “Good to Know,” a weekend morning program on Scripps News dedicated to positive stories from Scripps News reporters nationwide. Hosted by Alexa Liacko, the show emphasizes diversity, inclusion, kindness, inspiration, and fun.
Your feedback highlights the moments when negative news dominates and underscores the need for balance.
