The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest has completed the Westphal Parks Acquisition, adding 589 acres to the forest in the Tobacco Root Mountains 14 miles east of Twin Bridges.
The acquisition was made possible through funding via Land and Water Conservation Funds. The LCWF was established by Congress in 1964 to fulfill a bipartisan commitment to safeguard natural areas, water resources and cultural heritage, and to provide recreation opportunities to all Americans.
The Conservation Fund originally purchased the parcel from a private party who held the land until the Forest Service could acquire funding for the property.
āAdding this property to the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest will increase recreational, wildlife viewing and hunting opportunities by providing public access for generations to come,ā said Butte District Ranger Tim Lahey.

The area is a popular destination for a wide variety of outdoor activities and exists in a scenic, rugged portion of the Tobacco Root range. Curly Lake Trail No. 7159 cuts through the north half of this property, providing easy access to Westphal Parks and several backcountry trail loop opportunities.
