Wildland firefighters were working Sunday to contain a small new wildfire in the Miller Creek drainage south of Missoula.
Crews were dispatched at 9:27 a.m. to the Plant fire, located above and north of Plant Creek in the upper Miller Creek drainage, about 10 miles southeast of Missoula.
Around 6 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were laying hose through the fire, which was burning ground fuels but not larger trees and appeared to be about 3 acres. Hardly any flames were visible across the steep and blackened south-facing slope as brush smoldered and firefighters in green and yellow fire-resistant wildland fire clothes clambered up and down the mountainside.
Just before 5:30 p.m., the Lolo National Forest, on which the fire is burning, stated that the fire had burned 2.5 acres in grass and timber and was showing “low to moderate fire behavior.” The Lolo, in a social media post, stated that 15 personnel, three wildland fire engines, two water tenders and a helicopter were working the fire.
