An actor known for his comedic TV and film roles pleaded guilty to a federal charge on Monday for his involvement in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.
Jay Johnston confessed to obstructing officers during a civil disorder, a felony offense, and is set to be sentenced on Oct. 7. He could face up to five years in federal prison, though sentencing guidelines recommend 8 to 14 months.
The 55-year-old actor has appeared in various projects since the 90s, including “Arrested Development,” “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Better Call Saul,” “Mr. Show with Bob and David,” and “Bob’s Burgers.” He was dismissed from “Bob’s Burgers” following his participation in the riot, as reported by The Daily Beast.
Johnston has not worked in acting since his arrest in Los Angeles in June 2023, after being identified as one of the individuals involved in pushing against police and aiding rioters near the U.S. Capitol tunnel. The FBI affidavit showed several photos of Johnston during the riot, where he was seen taking a police shield and distributing it to others while wearing a camouflage neck gaiter and dark jacket.
In March 2021, the FBI sought the public’s help in identifying Johnston, who was then unidentified. His attorney and three associates confirmed his identity based on the photos. Johnston admitted his involvement in a text message, mentioning that the situation escalated into an attack where he was maced and tear-gassed. Flight records show he traveled to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 4 and returned home on Jan. 7.
Johnston is among the 1,450 individuals charged from all states for their participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. According to The Justice Department, 835 individuals have pleaded guilty to federal charges.
