A cyberattack disrupted operations at the Sibanye Stillwater mining operations in Montana on Wednesday.
Officials at the mine are currently in the process of gathering information about the extent of the attack. Some computer systems were offline in the afternoon but are slowly being restored.
An official from the United Steelworkers union mentioned that the smelter operations in Columbus were affected as all automated systems were not functioning.
The Columbus facility, which handles recycled mine material, has several hundred employees who are still working despite the disruption.
Sibanye Stillwater, a company based in South Africa, owns the Stillwater and East Boulder mines in Montana, along with the Columbus smelter. It is one of the largest employers in the region and is North America’s sole producer of platinum and palladium.
