MAMMOTH, Wyo. (AP) — Five individuals managed to escape a hot, acidic pond in Yellowstone National Park when the SUV they were traveling in veered off the road and entered an inactive geyser, as per park authorities on Friday.
The occupants were able to self-extricate from the 105-degree Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) water following the accident on Thursday morning and were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries that were not life-threatening, stated park spokesperson Morgan Warthin.
The road remained closed for approximately two hours on Friday while the SUV was removed from 9 feet of water, Warthin added.
The Semi-Centennial Geyser has not been active since a significant eruption in 1922. It is situated near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction.
The names of those involved were not disclosed by park officials, who mentioned that the incident is currently under investigation.
