MAMMOTH, Wyo. (AP) — Five individuals managed to escape a hot and acidic pond in Yellowstone National Park after the SUV they were traveling in veered off the road and plunged into an inactive geyser, as per park officials on Friday.
The occupants were able to exit the 105-degree Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) water on their own following the accident on Thursday morning and were transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, stated park spokesperson Morgan Warthin.
The road was shut down for approximately two hours on Friday while the SUV was retrieved from 9 feet of water, according to Warthin.
The Semi-Centennial Geyser has remained inactive since a significant eruption in 1922. It is situated near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction.
Park officials refrained from disclosing the identities of those involved and indicated that the incident is presently under investigation.
