MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee is known for its love of Miller Beer, Brewers baseball, and the iconic “Bronze Fonz” statue.
As the deepest blue city in swing state Wisconsin, Milwaukee also has a strong affinity for Democrats.
Despite this, some find it difficult to accept that Milwaukee is hosting former President Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention, while nearby Chicago will host President Joe Biden and the Democrats in August.
The situation was not helped by Trump’s comments describing Milwaukee as “horrible” just a month before the convention is set to begin.
Furthermore, Milwaukee was supposed to host the Democratic National Convention in 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. Local businesses are now feeling the impact as expected reservations for the RNC have not materialized.
While some residents like Jake Schneider express discontent over the Republican presence, others see the economic opportunities and chance to showcase Milwaukee in a positive light during the convention.
Despite the controversy, Milwaukee has been in the national spotlight, with recent events like the Bucks winning the NBA championship and the airing of “Top Chef” filmed in the city.
Both Democrats and Republicans acknowledge the importance of Wisconsin as a battleground state, making it a prime location for the back-to-back conventions.
Although Milwaukee itself is heavily Democratic, the suburbs surrounding the city are more politically diverse, making them a target for Republican energizing efforts.
While some Democrats initially objected to Milwaukee hosting the convention, ultimately the city was chosen and now residents are preparing for the upcoming event.
Despite differing political views, many are hopeful that the convention will showcase the best of Milwaukee and provide an economic boost to the city.
As preparations continue, businesses are questioning revenue estimates and protestors are raising concerns about being kept too far from the convention sites.
Despite the challenges, there is a sense of optimism among residents that the convention will ultimately be a positive experience for the city.
