Governor says man killed at Trump rally was former fire chief who ‘died a hero’
BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro says the man who was killed at a rally for former President Donald Trump was a former fire department chief from the area. He was identified as Corey Comperatore. Shapiro said Sunday that Comperatore “died a hero” and dove onto his family to protect them. Also Sunday, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that bomb-making materials were found inside the vehicle of the man suspected in the Trump rally shooting. There were also bomb-making materials found at his home. The two officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. President Joe Biden planned to address the nation Sunday afternoon after a Situation Room briefing on the shooting.
The Latest: New details emerge about Trump rally shooting suspect
Law enforcement officials say a shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee. Biden to address the nation on Trump’s shooting as he works to balance politics with calls for unity
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is addressing the nation Sunday afternoon after a Situation Room briefing about the apparent assassination attempt on his predecessor, Donald Trump. The announcement of Biden’s planned remarks comes after homeland security and law enforcement officials briefed Biden, and as the White House continues to call for national unity and condemn the stunning act of violence. Biden’s team is grappling privately with how to manage the political implications of a shooting targeting the man the president hopes to defeat in November’s election. Calibrating the right tone going forward could be especially challenging, with Election Day less than four months away.
What we know about the 20-year-old suspect in the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump
WASHINGTON (AP) — Law enforcement officials are working to learn more about the 20-year-old Pennsylvania man they believe tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally and to determine what drove him to open fire, killing one spectator. Authorities identified Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the shooter who fired from a rooftop outside the rally venue in Butler before he was killed by the Secret Service. An FBI official said late Saturday that a motive had not yet been determined. Public court records in Pennsylvania show no past criminal cases against Crooks, who graduated from high school two years ago.
The Secret Service is investigating how a gunman who shot and injured Trump was able to get so close
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump at his rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service said the gunman fired multiple shots at the stage from an high position outside of the rally venue on Saturday. Secret Service agents killed the gunman. An Associated Press analysis of more than a dozen videos and photos from the scene of the Trump rally, as well as satellite imagery of the site, shows the shooter was able to get astonishingly close to the stage. The roof where the body lay was less than 150 meters from where Trump was speaking.
A few short minutes after Trump took the stage, shots rang out
BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — A few short minutes into Donald Trump’s campaign rally, shots rang out, at least five. He clutched at his ear as dark-suited Secret Service agents dashed toward him. Trump dropped to the ground as the agents yelled, “Get down!” Thousands of rallygoers moved as one, dropping down, too, as silence spread across the field, punctuated only by an occasional scream. Moments later, as agents tried to usher the former president offstage as blood trickled from his ear, Trump yelled at them to wait. He pumped his fist as the crowd cheered, and seemed to mouth the word “fight,” as agents hustled him to a waiting black SUV. Trump pumped his fist one more time before getting inside.
Reagan survived an assassination attempt and his response changed the trajectory of his presidency
WASHINGTON (AP) — The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump has parallels to the last time a president or presidential candidate was wounded — in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was nearly killed by an assailant’s bullet. Reagan’s life was spared thanks to the quick actions of a Secret Service agent and the skill of doctors and nurses at a Washington, D.C., hospital. Reagan’s courage after the shooting created a bond with the American public and changed the trajectory of his presidency.
Hamas says Gaza cease-fire talks haven’t paused and claims military chief survived Israeli strike
MUWASI, Gaza Strip (AP) — Hamas says Gaza cease-fire talks continue and the group’s military commander is in good health a day after the Israeli military targeted Mohammed Deif with a massive airstrike that local health officials say killed at least 90 people including children. Deif’s condition remains unclear after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday night “there still isn’t absolute certainty” he was killed. Hamas representatives give no evidence to back up their assertion about the health of a chief architect of the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the war. Israel’s military says the strike killed another Hamas commander who was a close associate of Deif.
Treason and espionage cases are rising in Russia since the war in Ukraine began
TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Treason cases were once rare in Russia, a handful each year. But they — along with espionage prosecutions — have skyrocketed since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The crackdown is ensnaring Russians and foreigners alike, regardless of their political views. Victims include Kremlin critics, independent journalists and veteran scientists working with countries that Moscow considers friendly. These cases stand out from the growing crackdown on dissent that has reached unprecedented levels. They are investigated almost exclusively by the powerful FSB security agency, with specific charges and evidence not always revealed. The accused are usually held in the notorious Lefortovo Prison until their trials, where they are almost always convicted and given long prison sentences.
Carlos Alcaraz wins Wimbledon by beating Novak Djokovic and now owns 4 Slam titles at age 21
LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final for the second year in a row to collect his fourth Grand Slam title at age 21. Alcaraz won 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in front of a Centre Court crowd that included Kate, the Princess of Wales. A year ago, Alcaraz beat Djokovic in five sets for the title at the All England Club. This one was much easier for the Spaniard and gave him his second major championship in a row after last month’s French Open. He won his first Slam trophy at the 2022 U.S. Open as a teenager. Djokovic was denied in his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title and 25th major overall.
