2024 Open Championship odds, preview: British Open long shot picks for Royal Troon
We know what the top of the odds board looks like, and it features some usual suspects including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, World No. 2 and 2014 Open Champion Rory McIlroy, U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau, PGA Champion Xander Schauffele and more.
But with all of these players at 14/1 or worse, we’re moving down the odds board to find some potential 2024 British Open long shot picks for Royal Troon.
These odds aren’t incredibly long here but considering the names ahead of Fleetwood, this fits the bill. Fleetwood has been in terrific form this season, which includes a T3 finish at The Masters, T26 at the PGA Championship and T16 at the U.S. Open.
Fleetwood did miss the cut in his only Open appearance at Royal Troon, but in terms of his career, 2016 was a lifetime ago.
As an Englishman, Fleetwood naturally has a game that fits a links-style course and has seen huge success at The Open. That includes T10 in 2023, T4 in 2022 and a second-place finish in 2019.
If you’re looking outside of the top-10 names on the board, you can do much worse than a Tyrrell Hatton, a European player with the ability to play a links-style course and some history at Royal Troon.
He was recently as high as +4000 at FanDuel Sportsbook, but the market has caught on and he’s already down to +3000 as his highest price (Caesars). There is always value to shopping around for the best price.
Hatton has four top-20 finishes at The Open, with his best ever being T5 at Royal Troon in 2016 following a 68 on Sunday. As a LIV player, Hatton earned a victory in Nashville last month. And both Brooks Koepka and DeChambeau have proven you can jump back into ultra-competitive golf and win from LIV.
The Englishman finished inside the top 10 at the Masters and until blowing up on Sunday at Pinehurst, was having a very solid U.S. Open.
If you are looking for a big-time long shot that may net you a great payout if it hits, look no further than 26-year-old Korean Sungjae Im.
While Im’s resume wouldn’t make you think he’d light up Royal Troon at first glance, there is value in the odds and reason to believe he can outperform his position on the odds board by a great deal.
He was T20 last year at Royal Liverpool and finished T4 in the Scottish Open on Sunday before heading to Royal Troon, so we can expect the same level of preparation for the challenges posed by a European links-style course.
While his performance in majors this season has not been great, Im is in fine form overall following a top-five finish at the Scottish Open. He also recently went T3 at the Travelers and prior to the U.S. Open, he was T8 at The Memorial and T9 at Colonial the week before.
While an outright bet is not how we’d necessarily play this one, it’s still always worthwhile to take a look at Tiger Woods odds for the British Open.
Tiger last played at the U.S. Open, going +7 over the first two rounds and missing the cut. He also missed the cut at the PGA Championship this season after making it but finishing 60th at The Masters. For these reasons, the expectations aren’t too high, and you can win $2,000 for just a $10 bet on the three-time Open Champion to win at Royal Troon.
Woods was absent from the 2016 Open at Royal Troon, but for what it’s worth, he finished in 9th place at the 2004 event some two decades ago.
