President Joe Biden sat down for an exclusive interview with NBC News anchor Lester Holt at the White House on Monday, slated to air unedited at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
This interview marks the latest media appearance for the president following scrutiny of his performance during June’s debate with Donald Trump. It is also his first interview since the assassination attempt against Trump on Saturday.
In preview snippets shared by NBC News ahead of the broadcast, President Biden acknowledged his age, stating, “But I’m only three years older than Trump, number one. And number two, my mental acuity has been pretty damn good. I’ve gotten more done than any president has in a long time in three-and-a-half years. I’m willing to be judged on that.”
The president reiterated his commitment to run in the 2024 presidential race, noting that he values the voices of those who supported him in the primaries. “I listen to them,” he affirmed.
The interview coincides with Day 1 of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Donald Trump was officially nominated for president by the Republican Party. On the same day, Trump introduced Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential pick.
The Democratic National Convention, set for August 19-22 in Chicago, will see President Biden as the presumptive nominee for the party in the 2024 election.
Despite dismissing the idea of a “mini-primary” in the past, President Biden mentioned last week at a press conference during the NATO summit that he would allow delegates at the convention to vote according to their conscience. “Obviously they’re free to do whatever they want,” he stated. “If I show up at the convention and everybody says ‘We want somebody else,’ that’s the democratic process.” However, he expressed confidence that such a scenario would not unfold.
