MILES CITY — A severe storm swept through Miles City on Saturday evening, causing trees to fall, property damage, and a widespread power outage.
Residents endured nearly 80 mph winds, with one couple, Jackie and Blane Zimmerman, experiencing the brunt of the storm while driving home.
“As we were driving up North Montana Street, Blane noticed what looked like a microburst or tornado,” recounted Zimmerman. “He warned me to hold on, and suddenly we were pushed into a street, hitting a pole. The whole ordeal lasted about five minutes, with the pickup truck feeling like it was going to tip over at any moment.”
The Zimmermans witnessed what seemed to be converging tornado-like winds, though no official confirmation of a tornado has been made. The conditions were still terrifying for them.
Others in the town also felt the impact of the storm. Mary Catherine Dunphy, a long-time resident, described feeling her building shake in a way she had never experienced before.
Dunphy expressed concerns about the worsening weather conditions and potential future problems for the community.
Briana and Nathan Mardikian were inside their home watching a movie when they heard trees falling outside due to the worsening storm.
Their car was damaged by falling trees, but neighbors quickly came to help with the cleanup. Despite the damage, the car remained drivable, providing a silver lining to the situation.
Although the storm has passed and power is being restored, questions remain about the nature of the storm in Miles City that night.
Residents like Mardikian are thankful that no injuries occurred, despite significant property damage.
The Zimmermans echoed the sentiment, grateful that everyone stayed safe and came together to support each other.
