Last month, Ryne “Ryno” Sandberg’s statue was unveiled on Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field, where the MLB Hall of Famer played second base for the Chicago Cubs from 1982-94 and 1996-97.
But before his MLB career, Sandberg’s journey began in 1978 with the Helena Phillies, coinciding with the start of modern professional baseball in Montana’s Capital City.
Prior to Sandberg, another Hall of Famer played his first pro ball year in Helena, 124 years ago, who also went on to achieve fame with the Cubs.
