A new group of members of the European Parliament will be joining the familiar faces this week, with a mix of influencers, activists, and even a former jockey. These 720 MEPs were elected by EU citizens in June. Here’s a closer look at some of the more unique representatives heading to the parliament in Strasbourg, France:
Fidias Panayiotou
24-year-old Cypriot YouTuber Fidias Panayiotou surprised even his own family when he decided to run for EU lawmaker. Despite initial doubts, he proved them wrong with his successful campaign. Known for his prank videos, Panayiotou has no political background but has chosen a different approach to representing his constituents.
Nina Carberry
Irish MEP and former jockey Nina Carberry, 39, has transitioned from horse racing to political negotiations. After a successful racing career and a win on Dancing With The Stars Ireland, Carberry is now a member of Fine Gael, representing Ireland in the EU parliament.
Lena Schilling
23-year-old Austrian climate activist Lena Schilling, before her election as a Green MEP, was a prominent figure in the Fridays For Future protests in Austria. Raised in a politically active family, Schilling aims to make a difference where laws are made.
Ilaria Salis
Italian anti-fascist activist Ilaria Salis, who had faced legal issues in Hungary, has gained immunity as an MEP. Salis, known for her activism against neo-Nazis, will represent the Green and Left Alliance party in the European Parliament.
Carola Rackete
Driven by the threat from the right, Carola Rackete now represents Germany’s far-left after her work in migrant rescue missions. A former captain of the Sea-Watch 3, Rackete is now focusing on environmental and social justice issues in her political career.
