A fresh batch of EU representatives will be joining the European Parliament this week, alongside some familiar faces. This group includes influencers, activists, and even a former jockey.
These individuals are part of the 720 MEPs elected by EU citizens in June. Here is a closer look at some of the unique members heading to the parliament in Strasbourg, France:
Fidias Panayiotou
Cypriot YouTuber Fidias Panayiotou, 24, surprised many, including his own family, when he decided to run for EU lawmaker. Despite initial skepticism, he managed to secure a seat in the parliament.
While he lacks political experience, he has engaged with voters in unconventional ways, such as seeking their opinions on important decisions like voting for the European Commission president.
He faced controversy for his actions in Japan but has since apologized. He will serve as an independent lawmaker.
Nina Carberry
Nina Carberry, 39, a former jockey from Ireland, has transitioned from the racing world to politics. She now represents Fine Gael, one of Ireland’s main parties, as an EU lawmaker.
Her priorities include advocating for Irish farmers and fishers, reflecting her background growing up on a farm.
Lena Schilling
Lena Schilling, a 23-year-old Austrian climate activist, is now an MEP for the Greens. She is known for her involvement in environmental activism and was a prominent figure in the Fridays For Future school protests.
Despite facing some controversy, she remains committed to her activism and political work.
Ilaria Salis
Italian anti-fascist activist Ilaria Salis, 40, gained attention for her trial in Hungary before the EU election. She will represent the Green and Left Alliance party.
Her activism extends to various causes, including housing rights and anti-fascism.
Carola Rackete
Carola Rackete, known for her involvement in migrant rescue operations, will now represent Germany’s far-left in the European Parliament. She has a background in environmental work and activism.
Her decision to align with the far-left is rooted in her belief that environmental issues are closely tied to social justice concerns.
