JD Vance, Trump’s pick for vice president, will introduce himself to a national audience at the RNC
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance will introduce himself to a national audience as he addresses the Republican National Convention. The Ohio senator’s headlining address on Wednesday will be his first speech as the Republican vice-presidential nominee. He’s a relative political unknown who rapidly morphed in recent years from a severe critic to an aggressive defender of Trump. Vance is the first millennial to join a major-party ticket, and he joins the race as questions about the age of the men at the top of the tickets — 78-year-old Trump and 81-year-old President Joe Biden — have been high on the list of voters’ concerns.
Unity at the RNC, knocks on Trump’s prosecutions and Senate politics: Takeaways from day 2
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Republican National Convention marched into its second day Tuesday, showcasing classic GOP themes like border security and public safety that have become the centerpieces of former President Donald Trump’s campaign. With Trump’s primary rivals speaking, it was also an occasion for the GOP to demonstrate its unity, a sharp contrast to the Democratic party’s mounting concerns over the viability of President Joe Biden.
Biden seriously considering proposals on Supreme Court term limits, ethics code, AP sources say
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is seriously considering proposals to establish term limits for U.S. Supreme Court justices, and an ethics code that would be enforceable under law, amid growing concerns that the justices are not held accountable. That’s according to three people briefed on the plans who were not authorized to speak publicly about proposals that have not been finalized. Any changes would require congressional approval, which would be unlikely in a divided Congress. But with Republican nominee Donald Trump bragging about putting the three justices on the high court who are now part of the conservative majority, Biden’s call for major changes could help animate his voters.
Biden says cooling political rhetoric doesn’t mean he’ll ‘stop telling the truth’ about Trump
LAS VEGAS (AP) — President Joe Biden has returned to the campaign trail for the first time since the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, continuing his call to calm the divisive rhetoric on both sides. But Biden also argued Tuesday that doing so “doesn’t mean we should stop telling the truth” as he tore into his Republican rival. Biden spoke at the NAACP convention in Las Vegas, aiming to showcase his administration’s support for Black voters who are a tentpole of the Democratic coalition. He’ll also participate in an interview with BET. It’s all counterprogramming to Trump and the Republican National Convention under way in Milwaukee.
As Gaza’s doctors struggle to save lives, many lose their own in Israeli airstrikes
BEIRUT (AP) — Israel’s 9-month-old war with Hamas in Gaza has decimated the territory’s medical system. It has not only wreaked physical destruction on hospitals and health facilities, it has devastated Gaza’s medical personnel. The U.N. says more than 500 health care workers have been killed since October. One of those killed was Dr. Hassan Hamdan, a plastic surgeon who specialized in wound reconstruction. An Israeli airstrike killed him earlier this month, along with his wife, son, two daughters, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, six grandchildren and one other person, as his family sheltered in their home in an Israeli-declared “safe zone.”
A Gaza father mourns his baby boy, killed in bed by an Israeli airstrike
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A father in Gaza is mourning a baby boy killed in bed by an Israeli airstrike. Outside a hospital, Mahmoud Mikdad cradles the boy in his lap, unable or unwilling to say goodbye. Flies circle and land in the child’s soft hair. His name was Yamam. The father, his voice hoarse, lifts his head to the sky and screams: “What did he do wrong, my God? What did he do wrong?” According to hospital records and health officials, Israeli strikes killed more than 60 Palestinians in southern and central Gaza from Monday night into Tuesday. Israel has said it is pursuing Hamas militants who are hiding among civilians.
Three days after attempted assassination, Trump shooter remains an elusive enigma
BETHEL PARK, Pa. (AP) — Three days after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the 20-year-old man who came close to killing the former president remains an enigma. Neighbors describe Thomas Matthew Crooks as an intelligent loner with few friends who left a vanishingly thin social media footprint and no hint of strong political beliefs. Even his cellphone bore few clues after the FBI accessed its contents, frustrating investigators’ efforts to identify a potential motive. Classmates at Bethel Park High School said Crooks was smart but standoffish, often seen wearing headphones and preferring to sit alone at lunch looking at his phone.
Iran threat prompted more security at Trump rally as officials warn of potential for copycat attacks
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal law enforcement officials are warning of possible copycat attacks or retaliatory violence after the attempt on Donald Trump’s life, as a visibly stronger security detail surrounds the Republican nominee and President Joe Biden. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has also received Secret Service protection. A threat on Donald Trump’s life from Iran prompted additional security in the days before Saturday’s rally, but it was unrelated to the assassination attempt on the Republican presidential nominee. That’s according to two U.S. officials.
UK’s new Labour government sets out plans to ‘take the brakes off’ the economy in King’s Speech
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s new Labour Party government campaigned on a promise to bring bold change at modest cost. Prime Minister Keir Starmer gets a chance to show how he aims to reconcile those two aims on Wednesday when the government announces its plans for the coming year. Starmer said the measures will “take the brakes off Britain” and “create wealth for people up and down the country” by spurring economic growth. The government says the speech will include more than 35 bills, including measures on housebuilding and nationalizing Britain’s railways and creating a publicly owned green energy firm. Labour won a landslide victory in Britain’s July 4 election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.
A dam fails after rain, wind, tornadoes pound the Midwest. The Chicago area is cleaning up
CHICAGO (AP) — Severe storms in the Midwest have overtopped a dam in southern Illinois and left the Chicago area cleaning up. Officials say a reservoir dam failed near the Illinois community of Nashville. First responders tried Tuesday to ensure all 300 people in the evacuation zone got out safely. There were no reports of injuries there. National Weather Service employees at a suburban Chicago office had to run for cover late Monday as storms swept through. The service says preliminary information shows that an EF-1 tornado hit Chicago, including the Loop area. Four areas of suburban Chicago also saw tornadoes. A woman in Indiana died after a tree fell on a home.
