It sharply undercuts his post-debate claim that “average Democrats” are still with him even if some “big names” are turning on him. The new survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, conducted two weeks after Biden’s debate flop, also found that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that Biden has the mental capability to serve as president, down from 40% in an AP-NORC poll from February. The findings underscore the challenges the 81-year-old president faces as he works to silence calls from within his own party to leave the race.
Homeland Security inspector general investigates Secret Service handling of security at Trump rally
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general says it’s investigating the Secret Service’s handling of security for ex-President Donald Trump the day a gunman tried to assassinate him at a Pennsylvania rally. The agency said Wednesday the objective is to evaluate the Secret Service’s “process for securing” Trump’s Saturday event. No date is given for when the investigation started. The shooting has raised questions about how the gunman could climb onto a roof with a clear line of sight to the Republican ex-president, who says he was shot in the ear. Democratic President Joe Biden already had directed an independent review. The Secret Service says it understands the importance of the review ordered by Biden.
‘Of all the places’: Deep red Butler, Pennsylvania, grapples with Trump assassination attempt
BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — A common refrain on the streets of Butler, Pennsylvania, in the wake of Saturday’s assassination attempt on Donald Trump was: “Of all the places.” The town is rural and neighborly. And it’s in Trump country. Residents expressed shock that an attempt would be made on his life in such a Trump stronghold. Butler County sits on the western edge of a presidential swing state. The Republican won there twice with about 66% of the vote, and about 57% of the county’s 139,000 registered voters are Republican. A local attorney likened it to the pope being shot in Vatican City.

Shogun” took full advantage of the absence of last year’s top three nominees – “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” – to dominate in drama and give FX a leading 93 nominations, The nominations come just six months after the last Emmys, which were delayed by last year’s Hollywood strikes. The Emmys will air on ABC on Sept. 15.
Navy exonerates 256 Black sailors unjustly punished in 1944 after a deadly California port explosion
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Navy has exonerated 256 Black sailors found to be unjustly punished in 1944 following a California port explosion that killed hundreds of service members and exposed racist double standards among the then-segregated ranks. At Port Chicago naval weapons station near San Francisco, 5,000 tons of munitions detonated, killing 320 personnel and injuring 390. Black sailors concerned for their safety refused to return to loading bombs without training on how to safely handle the munitions. The Navy punished them. Now, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro has signed paperwork saying the sailors were unjustly tried and convicted, clearing their names. Del Toro signed the paperwork Wednesday, the 80th anniversary of the disaster.

Water rescues and evacuations took place in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri on Wednesday after as much as 11 inches of rain fell overnight. A confirmed tornado was strong enough Tuesday to move an old B-52 bomber in Rome, New York. Some buildings in Rome are destroyed, and streets are clogged with debris. Flooding left drivers stranded around Toronto. The East Coast from Maine to the Carolinas is being warned of dangerous heat.
Traces of cyanide are found in the blood of Vietnamese and Americans found dead in a Bangkok hotel
BANGKOK (AP) — Initial autopsy results showed traces of cyanide in the blood of six people who were found dead in a room at a central Bangkok luxury hotel. The bodies were found Tuesday in Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in downtown Bangkok. They had last been seen alive Monday afternoon when food was delivered to the room. Police said cyanide was found in drinking containers. On Wednesday, medical officials said cyanide was likely the cause of death. The dead were two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnamese nationals — three men and three women. Officials say a husband and wife among the dead had invested about $278,000 with two of the others, suggesting money was a motive.

Paris mayor dips into the Seine River to showcase its improved cleanliness before Olympic events
PARIS (AP) — After months of anticipation, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the Seine River, fulfilling a promise to show the river was clean enough to host open swimming competitions during the 2024 Olympics. Clad in a wetsuit, Hidalgo plunged Wednesday into the river. Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet joined her. It’s part of a broader effort to showcase the river’s improved cleanliness ahead of the Summer Games which will kick off July 26 and host open-water swimming competitions. Daily water quality tests in early June indicated unsafe levels of E. coli bacteria, followed by recent improvements.
