North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum was on the shortlist of former President Donald Trump’s potential vice presidential picks. Although Ohio Sen. JD Vance ultimately secured the role, Burgum’s political future seems far from over.
The Republican governor’s second term is ending soon, presenting new opportunities, especially if his almost-running mate wins.
During the Republican National Convention, Scripps News’ Maritsa Georgiou asked Burgum about rumors of Trump addressing him as “Secretary” on a phone call, where Trump clarified they won’t be running mates this election cycle.
Burgum didn’t directly address the question but mentioned Trump’s supportive gestures and hinted at future possibilities, dependent on Trump’s election outcome.
He expressed gratitude for his conversation with Trump, stating that his initial words to Trump were “Thank God you’re alive,” following the recent assassination attempt. Burgum also endorsed Trump’s decision to choose Vance.
Before the vice presidential announcement, Trump reportedly had four top contenders, including Vance, Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio, and Sen. Tim Scott. Burgum and Rubio were informed they weren’t selected.
Burgum highlighted Vance’s background and personal story, along with his ties to crucial battleground states, as factors contributing to Trump’s decision.
Watch the video above to view Burgum’s complete interview, covering topics like tariffs, inflation, and his views on fellow Republicans.
