If you have an account online with the Social Security Administration, you may need to update your credentials soon. Those who created an account before Sept. 18, 2021, will soon need to transition to a Login.gov account to continue accessing their online services, according to the agency.
The agency stated that this change will simplify the sign-in process and align with federal authentication standards, providing a safe and secure access to online services.
Social Security plans to disable its previous online service later this year.
“My Social Security offers a safe and secure way for individuals to interact with us,” said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “We are excited to transition to Login.gov for accessing our online services, making the process more streamlined and user-friendly for the public across agencies.”
Individuals with existing Login.gov or ID.me accounts do not need to create a new account.
The online service offers personalized tools for everyone, whether they receive benefits or not. Users can utilize their account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, or manage their current benefits.
