ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark broke the WNBA record for assists in a game Wednesday night, finishing with 19 in the Fever’s 101-93 loss to the Dallas Wings. The previous record was 18 by Courtney Vandersloot for Chicago on Aug. 31, 2020. Vandersloot also had 18 in a playoff game on Sept. 28, 2021. And the league’s previous record for assists by a rookie was 16, set by Ticha Penicheiro for Sacramento on July 29, 1998. The record-breaker for Clark came on a play where she set Kelsey Mitchell up for a 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining. That tied it at 93, but Dallas closed with an 8-0 run. Clark entered the game as the WNBA’s assists-per-game leader this season. She added 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting.

Stegosaurus fossil fetches nearly $45M, setting record for dinosaur auctions
NEW YORK (AP) — Sotheby’s says the nearly complete fossilized remains of a stegosaurus have sold for $44.6 million at a New York auction. The buyer is American and their name was not disclosed. The fossil dubbed “Apex” was auctioned Wednesday. It’s considered to be among the most complete fossil ever found. The price blew past a pre-sale estimate of $4 million to $6 million and past a prior auction record for dinosaur fossils. That record was $31.8 million for the remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex nicknamed Stan, sold in 2020. A commercial paleontologist discovered the fossil in 2022 on his property near the small town of Dinosaur, Colorado.
The last cards have been dealt as the iconic Mirage closes its doors on the Las Vegas Strip
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Mirage’s signature volcano has erupted for the last time. The iconic Las Vegas tropical island-themed hotel-casino closed its doors with a ceremony Wednesday. New operators Hard Rock International and Florida-based Seminole Gaming are planning a three-year renovation to update the existing property. That includes replacing the fire-spewing volcano with a towering guitar-shaped hotel with 600 rooms. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas is due to open in 2027.
A meteor streaked over the NYC skyline before disintegrating over New Jersey
NEW YORK (AP) — NASA has confirmed that a meteor streaked over the New York City skyline before disintegrating over nearby New Jersey. William Cooke, the head of the space agency’s Meteoroid Environments Office, said the fireball was first sighted at an altitude of 51 miles above Manhattan at around 11:17 a.m. on Tuesday. He says the meteor passed over Newark, New Jersey, before disintegrating 31 miles above Mountainside. He says no meteorites reached the planet’s surface and that the space rock moved at a speed of about 41,000 mph and descended at a relatively steep angle of 44 degrees from vertical. Cooke says the New York City area gets treated to a daylight fireball every year or two.
Jon Jones fights charges stemming from alleged hostility during a drug test at his home
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has pleaded not guilty to a pair of misdemeanor charges stemming from a drug test at his home in which he was accused of being hostile. He appeared with his attorney Wednesday for a virtual court hearing. Jones has said on social media that the allegations were baseless and that he never threatened anyone. A woman who worked for a company that conducts drug tests on professional athletes initially filed a report with police in April. She accused Jones of threatening her and cursing at her when she and a colleague visited Jones’ home for a test in March.
Movie armorer seeks dismissal of her conviction or new trial in fatal shooting by Alec Baldwin
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A movie armorer has asked a judge to dismiss her involuntary manslaughter conviction or offer her a new trial in the shooting death of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin. In court filings Tuesday, attorneys for armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed alleged suppression of evidence and misconduct by the prosecution. The trial of Baldwin came to a sudden and stunning end last week based on misconduct of police and prosecutors over the withholding of evidence from the defense in the 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust.” Prosecutors plan to respond next week. They blame Gutierrez-Reed for unwittingly bringing live ammunition onto the set of “Rust.”
Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro, just released from prison, gets roaring applause at RNC
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro took the stage at the Republican National Convention to enthusiastic cheers hours after being released from prison. He pushed talk of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack at the U.S. Capitol to the center of an event that has largely avoided mentioning the riot. Navarro left a Miami prison Wednesday morning, completing a four-month sentence for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the attack by a mob of former President Donald Trump’s supporters. He took a flight to Milwaukee, where he attacked the committee that led the investigation and cast his time in prison as a sign of loyalty to Trump.

Kathy Willens, pathbreaking Associated Press photographer who captured sports and more, dies at 74
NEW YORK (AP) — A pathbreaking photojournalist who helped cement women’s place behind the lens during her nearly 45-years career at The Associated Press has died. Kathy Willens was 74. Nephew Ben Willens says his aunt died Tuesday at her Brooklyn home of ovarian cancer. It was diagnosed shortly after her 2021 retirement. Willens was among The AP’s first female staff photographers, joining the news cooperative in 1976. She went on to shoot more than 90,000 images — of presidents and Pope John Paul II, protests and war, sports triumphs and human tragedy. Specializing in sports, Willens became a photographer of such stature that the New York Yankees paid tribute to her when she retired.
