Pitt coach Jeff Capel has signed a three-year contract extension, extending his tenure at the school through the 2029-30 season. Capel, aged 49, led the Panthers to consecutive 20-win seasons, with records of 24-12 in 2022-23 and 22-11 last season. Their success led to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023, after being predicted to finish 14th in the league in the preseason, earning Capel the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year award. Capel expressed his gratitude towards the University of Pittsburgh, stating, “The University of Pittsburgh continues to have outstanding leadership. … I am appreciative of the support they have provided me and my staff as we continue to build a Pitt Men’s Basketball program that competes for championships on a conference and national level annually.” Capel also praised the city of Pittsburgh and its fans, vowing to give their best on and off the court. With a record of 97-92 in six seasons at Pitt, Capel’s success has been recognized by Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke, who commended his leadership and vision for the program. Previously coaching at VCU and Oklahoma, Capel has successfully rebuilt the Pitt basketball program and has it on track for future success. –Field Level Media
