BILLINGS — Thursday is starting off dry, and for some, it will be the hottest day of the week with highs mainly in the mid to upper 90s due to downslope flow. Some areas east of Billings could even reach 100°.
A Pacific low will move across the area this afternoon, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms. While not expecting any severe storms, a few could produce small hail, gusty winds, and lightning. The dry conditions will elevate the fire weather threat. Be cautious and avoid causing any sparks!
High pressure will build across the area from Friday through the weekend, keeping conditions mostly dry. There may be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms as several disturbances pass through during that time.
Temperatures will begin to decrease on Friday with highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s through Monday. However, models indicate a return to extreme heat with daytime temperatures reaching the upper 90s and 100s by the middle of next week.
Smoke from western wildfires will keep hazy conditions on Thursday, but air quality should be okay for most as the smoke is not expected to reach the surface. Those with respiratory issues should monitor air quality, especially if planning to be outdoors for an extended period of time.
