Michael Mann is planning to create the sequel to “Heat” later this year.
The 81-year-old director had previously mentioned a sequel to the 1995 crime drama and has now provided an update that he is currently “deep into” writing the screenplay adaptation for “Heat 2” novel, co-written with Meg Gardiner. He aims to start shooting either in late 2024 or early 2025.
Rumors have surfaced that his “Ferrari” star Adam Driver and “Dune” actor Austin Butler could potentially take on the roles originally played by Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer, although Mann did not confirm this speculation.
After confirming in October that “Heat 2” would be his next project, Mann hinted in an interview with Deadline that Driver might portray a younger version of Neil McCauley.
He suggested, “Perhaps. We’re not discussing that yet. But Adam and I had a great working relationship on ‘Ferrari’. We share the same intense work ethic.”
