Israeli military says it has struck several Houthi targets in Yemen in response to attacks
SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The Israeli army says it struck several Houthi targets in western Yemen following a fatal drone attack by the rebel group in Tel Aviv the previous day. The Israeli strikes Saturday appeared to be the first on Yemeni soil since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. A number of “military targets” were hit in the western port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold, the Israeli army said, adding that its attack was “in response to the hundreds of attacks carried out against the state of Israel in recent months.” Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam wrote on social media platform X that Yemen was subjected to a “blatant Israeli aggression” that targeted fuel storage facilities and the province’s power station.

The biggest continuing effect has been on air travel. Carriers canceled thousands of flights and now have many of their planes and crews in the wrong place, while airports are facing continued problems with checking in and security on Saturday. At the heart of the massive disruption is CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that provides software to scores of companies worldwide. The company says the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows, noting that the issue behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.

Cars can no longer drive past what is often dubbed “the people’s house” at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The fence has been raised, and don’t even try to get past the gate without an appointment or badge.

President Joe Biden is calling longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas “a towering figure in our politics.” Jackson Lee died Friday night in Houston with her family around her. She was 74. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and then pancreatic cancer. The Democrat helped lead federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence, and to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday, recognizing when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free. Biden says she was “always fearless,” and that “she spoke truth to power and represented the power of the people of her district in Houston with dignity and grace.”

11 dead and dozens missing after a highway bridge in China crumbles in flooding and heavy storms
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Chinese authorities say 11 people have died in the partial collapse of a highway bridge in the country’s northwest following heavy storms and flooding. The official Xinhua News Agency said five vehicles that fell off the bridge have been recovered after the structure in Shaanxi province crumbled at around 8:40 p.m. Friday. It said rescue operations were still underway Saturday, with up to 30 people still missing. Meanwhile, around 30 people are missing and 40 homes were destroyed by storms and flooding in Sichuan province to the southwest.

NEW YORK (AP) — An outbreak of listeria has U.S. health officials advising people who are pregnant, elderly or have compromised immune systems to avoid eating sliced deli meat. The warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention comes as investigators work to identify the specific products involved in this listeria outbreak. CDC officials say people at risk should kill the germs by cooking the meat until it’s steaming hot, above an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Two people are known to have died from listeriosis in this outbreak. At least 28 more have been hospitalized across 12 states.
