Trump holding first rally after assassination attempt with his new running mate, Vance, by his side
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Republican Donald Trump will hold his first public campaign rally since he was injured in an assassination attempt, an event in the battleground state of Michigan alongside his new running mate. The joint rally with Ohio Sen. JD Vance on Saturday is the first for the pair since they became the GOP’s nominees at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Michigan is one of the crucial swing states expected to determine the outcome of the presidential election. With Vance by his side, Trump will deliver remarks in Grand Rapids, a historically Republican stronghold that has trended increasingly blue in recent elections.
Biden’s ability to win back skeptical Democrats is tested at a perilous moment for his campaign
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Mark Takano has added his name to the list of nearly three dozen Democrats in Congress who say it’s time for Biden to leave the presidential race. Takano says in a statement Saturday that Biden should “pass the torch” to Vice President Kamala Harris. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, meanwhile, says Harris is ready to “step up” should Biden decide to drop out. Some Democrats are split on whether Harris should be anointed or participate in an open nominating process during the party convention to find a success should Biden decide to drop out. Biden remains at his Delaware beach home where he’s recovering from COVID-19.
Israeli military says it has struck Houthi targets in Yemen in response to attacks
SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The Israeli army says it has struck several Houthi targets in western Yemen following a fatal drone attack by the rebel group in Tel Aviv the previous day. Saturday’s strikes appeared to be the first by Israel on Yemeni soil since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. The Israeli army says a number of “military targets” were hit in the port city of Hodeidah, a Houthi stronghold. The army adds that its attack was in response to “hundreds of attacks” against Israel in recent months. A Houthi spokesman says the “blatant Israeli aggression” targeted fuel storage facilities and the province’s power station.
This is how Secret Service protection has changed for presidents over the years
WASHINGTON (AP) — As the world has vastly changed, so has protection for presidents since the days when the public could come to the White House to meet Abraham Lincoln. Protective details have grown in size, responsibility and technology over more than a century of the Secret Service protecting presidents. When presidents leave the White House in modern times, they’re accompanied by a phalanx of Secret Service officers and agents. Cars can no longer drive past what is often dubbed “the people’s house” at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The fence has been raised, and don’t even try to get past the gate without an appointment or badge.
Malicious actors trying to exploit global tech outage for their own gain
As the world continues to recover from massive business and travel disruptions caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, malicious actors are trying to exploit the situation for their own gain. Government cybersecurity agencies across the globe and even CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz warned about phishing schemes that involve malicious actors posing as CrowdStrike employees offering to assist those recovering from the outage. Meanwhile, Microsoft said 8.5 million devices running its Windows operating system were affected by the faulty cybersecurity update Friday that led to worldwide disruptions.
Biden praises longtime US Rep Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who died of cancer
President Joe Biden is calling longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas “a towering figure in our politics.” Jackson Lee died Friday night in Houston with her family around her. She was 74. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and then pancreatic cancer. The Democrat helped lead federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence, and to get Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday, recognizing when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free. Biden says she was “always fearless,” and that “she spoke truth to power and represented the power of the people of her district in Houston with dignity and grace.”
As a scholar, he’s charted the decline in religion. Now the church he pastors is closing its doors
First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, plans to hold the last service of its 156-year history on Sunday. It’s among many U.S. churches that close their doors each year. But there’s a poignant twist in this story. First Baptist’s pastor, Ryan Burge, spends much of his time as a researcher, documenting the dramatic decline in religious affiliation in recent decades. With more Americans abandoning religious affiliation, it’s hard to grow and sustain a church, Burge says. He hopes his research, and his personal experience, can provide comfort to other pastors of struggling churches. “This is not all your fault,” Burge tells them.

Here’s what to do with deli meats as the CDC investigates a listeria outbreak across the U.S.
NEW YORK (AP) — An outbreak of listeria has U.S. health officials advising people who are pregnant, elderly or have compromised immune systems to avoid eating sliced deli meat. The warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention comes as investigators work to identify the specific products involved in this listeria outbreak. CDC officials say people at risk should kill the germs by cooking the meat until it’s steaming hot, above an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Two people are known to have died from listeriosis in this outbreak. At least 28 more have been hospitalized across 12 states.
The Olympics are coming to the capital of fashion. Expect uniforms befitting a Paris runway
PARIS (AP) — Sure, they call it the City of Light. But Paris is also the City of Fashion. So it’s no surprise that designers across the globe are busy getting their national team uniforms ready for their unique Olympic spotlight. The list of fashion labels joining up with Olympic committees to display their wares goes from industry giants like Ralph Lauren for Team USA and Emporio Armani for Italy to small, indie labels seeking to increase brand recognition and show off their national cultures, while emphasizing features like sustainability and adaptability. Designer Stella Jean says she knows she has only seconds of the world’s attention during the opening ceremony to make a lasting impression of her native Haiti.
