American golfer Billy Horschel is currently leading the British Open at four under par as we head into the final round on Sunday. Torrential rain and swirling winds at Royal Troon have made the competition for the Claret Jug wide open.
Horschel is ahead by one stroke, with a group of six players just behind him. This group includes USPGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, English players Justin Rose and Daniel Brown, South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, and Americans Sam Burns and Russell Henley.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is also in contention, just one shot behind at two under par after a challenging round.
A total of 12 players are within four shots of the lead, setting the stage for an exciting final round.
Overnight leader Shane Lowry struggled in the rainy conditions, dropping from eight under par to one under par by the end of his round.
Horschel made a strong move in his round, scoring a four-under 32 on the front nine with birdies at four, six, seven, and nine. Despite a couple of bogeys, he remains at the top of the leaderboard.
Despite a tough finish for Daniel Brown, he and Justin Rose are still in the running to become the first English winner since 1992.
Schauffele, fresh from his USPGA win, is also in contention at three under par after a round of 69. Scheffler is poised to make a move as well, remaining in the mix for his third major title.
Other players like Lawrence, Burns, and Henley took advantage of the early morning conditions to post strong scores and move up the leaderboard. The competition remains tight heading into the final round.
Overall, it promises to be an exciting finish to the British Open with multiple players in contention for the Claret Jug.
