ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Toston’s J.R. Harrell had an impressive bull ride on Friday night, scoring an 82.5 in his second go-round at the National High School Finals Rodeo. This performance propelled him to 10th place in the average standings at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
Harrell did not receive a score in his first go-round. Browning’s Tahj Wells is closely following in 11th place with his single score of 82 points.
Harrell’s ride was only surpassed by Sutton Schrunk of Valentine, Nebraska, who scored 86 points.
As the NHSFR approached its final day on Saturday, other Montanans in the competition included:
Columbia Falls’ Azzy Lara maintained the second spot in the average standings with a score of 149, trailing Kash Loyd of Cleburne, Texas by 3.5 points and leading Quaide Skjonsberg of Bluffton, Alberta, by four points in third place with 145. Great Falls’ Wyatt Warneke is currently 22nd in the average standings with a score of 121.

Miles City’s Caiden Gray is tied for third place in saddle bronc with an average score of 144, matching Jett Williams of Clarinda, Iowa. Corvallis’ Cash Trexler improved his position and is now in fourth place in tie-down roping average with a time of 20.2 seconds, registering a time of 9.96 in the evening session on Friday, which was the second best time of the night.
In pole bending, Townsend’s Ella Begger holds the 11th spot in the average standings with a combined time of 41.029 seconds. Martinsdale’s Walker Story is ranked 13th in reined cow horse after scoring 283.5 on Friday night.
Elle Werner of Clancy ended the evening with a strong performance in pole bending, clocking a time of 20.171, which was the third best time of the night. Werner did not receive a time in her first go-round.
The second go-round was scheduled to conclude at 9 a.m. on Saturday before the evening finals.
