Shaquil Barrett, a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker, announced his retirement on Saturday. The 31-year-old had signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent four months ago. In an Instagram post, Barrett expressed gratitude for his football career and stated his intention to focus on his family. He revealed that the tragic loss of his 2-year-old daughter in April had influenced his decision to retire. Despite going undrafted in 2014, Barrett had a successful nine-season NFL career, playing for the Denver Broncos and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He accumulated impressive stats, including 400 tackles, 59 sacks, and two Super Bowl wins. Barrett’s standout season in 2019, where he led the league in sacks, earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. His retirement comes after a season with the Buccaneers, where he recorded 52 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception. Barrett had signed a one-year, $9 million contract with the Dolphins in March. –Field Level Media
