Maura Tierney is making a comeback to NBC—and Thursday nights, just two hours earlier than the beloved show ER aired during its 15-season run. (Tierney was a part of the drama from Season 6 to Season 15.)
Tierney has landed a series regular role in Law & Order as the new lieutenant. This casting choice was expected as Camryn Manheim’s final episode was the Season 23 finale.
We’ll have to wait and see what kind of lieutenant Tierney’s character is and what we learn about her personal life. From the show’s history, she is likely to interact mostly with Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Riley (Reid Scott), and she may clash with DA Baxter (Tony Goldwyn)—who took over after Sam Waterson‘s Jack McCoy resigned—as well as with ADAs Price (Hugh Dancy) and Maroun (Odelya Halevi).
Shortly before the finale, it was announced that Manheim was leaving. “I thank Camryn for her three wonderful seasons helping us relaunch Law & Order,” said creator Dick Wolf in a statement to Variety. “She is a class act, and I wish her nothing but the best for her next chapter.”
The Season 23 finale did not write out Manheim’s Lieutenant Kate Dixon. Instead, it focused on Baxter and his family’s involvement in a case-of-the-week, revealing tensions in his personal life. The Season 24 premiere is expected to address how Manheim’s character exits the show.
