A select group of Democratic governors are gaining attention as possible running mates for current candidate Kamala Harris.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California, who has been asked about his own presidential aspirations, is a strong contender.
After President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris, Newsom voiced his full support for her candidacy.
“With the future of our democracy at stake, there is no one better suited to challenge Donald Trump’s destructive vision and lead our nation in a positive direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris,” Newsom stated on X.
“Kamala Harris is a patriotic leader who deserves our support and will carry on the legacy of those who worked to protect our country,” he added.

Other governors like Roy Cooper and Gretchen Whitmer have also endorsed Harris, making them potential candidates for vice president.
Cooper, the Governor of North Carolina, and Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan, could help secure vital support in their swing states.
Josh Shapiro, the Governor of Pennsylvania, is another name being mentioned. He won the previous election by a significant margin and is popular in the key swing state.
There is also talk of Andy Beshear, the Governor of Kentucky, possibly being in contention for the VP spot. He is considered a moderate Democrat and has won in a traditionally Republican state.

Retired astronaut Mark Kelly, now a Senator from Arizona, is also on the radar. With a military background and ties to the state, he could be a strong VP contender.
J. B. Pritzker, the Governor of Illinois, has also shown support for Harris. As a wealthy businessman with a direct approach to politics, he could make an impact in a condensed campaign.
Lastly, there is Wes Moore, the Governor of Maryland, who brings a fresh perspective as one of the few Black governors in U.S. history. His background in service and entrepreneurship could make him a compelling VP choice.
