President Joe Biden made the announcement on Sunday that he will not be seeking re-election against former president Donald Trump.
“I think he prioritized the country over himself,” shared Billings resident Gerald Kesslar. “I was relieved. It was about time. While I appreciate Biden and his work, it’s time for him to step back and pass the torch.”
Biden’s decision came after numerous Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, expressed doubts about his chances of winning in November.
“I felt relieved as it was expected,” stated Billings resident Robert Kelleher. “I believe we have a better chance at defeating Donald Trump this time, especially without President Biden in the race.”
Vice President Kamala Harris is now considered a frontrunner to take Biden’s place on the ballot after receiving his endorsement.
“I’m excited that Kamala might lead the country,” said Dianne Lewis.
According to a CBS poll conducted after the assassination attempt on the former president, Trump was ahead of Biden among likely voters, 52% to 47%. Meanwhile, Harris trailed Trump by three points, 51% to 48%.
Following the presidential debate between Biden and Trump last month, a Fox News poll showed Trump leading both Biden and Kamala by one point.
“I don’t think it’s wise for him to give up so easily. I support Trump, but I feel like Biden has chosen to disengage for the rest of his term,” expressed Thomas Fischer. “I don’t believe Kamala is fully ready to lead the country. The choice seems clear now.”
