What began as a fun camping trip for three childhood friends turned into a race against time to save a young man’s life from the depths of Bear Butte Lake in South Dakota.
On July 5, 17-year-olds Gracey Schave, Annika Goetz, and Kaylee Miranda-Pedersen were enjoying their summer vacation before their senior year at Spearfish (South Dakota) High School, learning how to paddleboard.
Donning their life vests, the girls eagerly headed to the water to explore Bear Butte Lake.
Within 30 minutes, they noticed a boy around their age in the water. Schave mentioned that they couldn’t understand his words, but he seemed to be yelling something to his family on the shore.
