2024 Paris Olympics Men’s Basketball odds, preview & picks: USA basketball odds to win gold & more
Team USA is a sizable favorite to win the Gold medal in Paris at -500 (DraftKings), which translates to an 83.3% implied chance.Â
Canada’s rise through the basketball ranks has been well-documented and is verified by the oddsmakers, who have them at +1100. Although that’s well behind the USA, it is the second-best among the field thanks to players such as Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and Jamal Murray.
The host nation France is third in odds at +1200, just behind Canada. They figure to have an elite defense with Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama, both manning the paint in a sport where there is no 3-second rule on defense.Â
Potentially the top two players in the world and their respective nations are fourth and fifth in odds: Serbia and Nikola Jokic are fourth at +1600, while Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece are fifth at +2000.
The remaining contenders are all in separate tiers of contention. Those teams include:
It’s rare that a team or individual is favored as heavily as -500 at the Olympics, but that’s a fair reflection of Team USA. If anything, it could be underselling their true ability.
The Americans’ roster is totally stacked with MVPs, champions, future Hall of Famers, elite scorers and defensive stars. There isn’t one part of the game the coaching staff won’t have the resources to address with their incredible roster, even following Kawhi Leonard’s exit from the team.
Pre-tournament warm-up matches and general expectations suggest the starting roster will be LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards and Joel Embiid. That leaves Kevin Durant, the leading scorer in Team USA history, to come off the bench, along with two-time champion Jrue Holiday, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis and others.
The USA also addressed its struggles on the boards in recent tournaments by including Embiid, Davis and Bam Adebayo on the roster. James and Tatum are also capable of averaging double-digit rebounds in 48 minutes.
The biggest adjustment for this team will be learning to play with mostly superstars. However, most of their players are unselfish and have already transitioned well during their friendly games.
USA Olympic Basketball schedule
Ant-Man was the No. 1 option for Team USA during the FIBA World Championships last year, where he earned the trust of Steve Kerr. He also said during the USA’s training camp that he was the primary option and planned to attack his opponents with that mentality.
Edwards has kept true to his word thus far, scoring 13, 16 and 17 points in three friendly games and aggressively hunting his shot when on the court. He hasn’t had an explosive night the way Curry did against Serbia, but he’s been consistent and comfortable with the ball in his hands.
Embiid is the odds-on favorite to lead the team in scoring, but he often looks out of place with the starters and hasn’t gotten his usual foul calls. Durant is another solid pick in this market given his history with the team, but he’s coming off of a minor injury and could come off the bench depending on how his return to the court goes.
