A years-long effort to remake Montana’s behavioral health system moved one step closer to becoming reality this week.
Members of the commission tasked with drafting a plan for how to spend $300 million presented their ideas to lawmakers in Helena on Tuesday.
The Behavioral Health System for Future Generations Commission was proposed by Governor Greg Gianforte and established during the 2023 Legislature through House Bill 872. Gianforte appointed nine people to serve on the commission, a mix of lawmakers, state health officials and representatives from the mental health field.
“There’s potential here for transformation, but there’s also potential here for hope, restoring hope for providers and patients alike,” Jean Branscum, CEO of the Montana Medical Association, a group that represents doctors, testified during the July 23 meeting.
