Black Butte Copper, the company interested in mining on private lands within the Smith River Watershed, has stated they do not plan to expand onto public lands; however, they have filed nearly 700 mining claims on public lands adjacent to the Smith River’s key tributary. A mineral withdrawal will hold them accountable to their initial promise to Montanans: No expansion onto public lands.
One must question: Was Black Butte Copper deceiving when they first claimed they would not expand onto public lands? If so, they would be following the pattern of many mining companies who say one thing and do another.
Some areas are too precious for mining. Did you know that over 40% of watersheds in the western USA are already contaminated due to historical mining on public lands! We cannot risk adding the Smith River Watershed to that list.
