The new Disney/Marvel comedy “Deadpool & Wolverine” had a successful opening weekend in North American theaters, earning an impressive $205 million. This places it as one of the top superhero films and the eighth-highest opening ever, according to analysts on Sunday.
David A. Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research commented, “The numbers are fantastic. These characters’ popularity is growing, not slowing down.”
The film has received positive reviews and excellent audience scores, with the popularity of Ryan Reynolds (who plays Deadpool and co-writes the film) and his friend Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) adding to its success.
Its opening weekend surpasses 2018’s “Black Panther” ($202 million) and falls just behind “Jurassic World” ($208 million in 2015). International ticket sales have already reached $233.3 million.
This debut also marks the best ever for an R-rated film, far exceeding the previous record holder, the first “Deadpool” ($133.7 million), as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
Last weekend’s top film, Universal’s “Twisters,” earned a decent $35.3 million but was overshadowed by the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
In third place for the weekend was Universal’s “Despicable Me 4,” bringing in $14.2 million in its fourth weekend. It has generated a total of $291.0 million in North America so far.
“Inside Out 2” from Disney and Pixar slipped to fourth place with $8.3 million, followed by horror mystery “Longlegs” with $6.8 million, starring Nicolas Cage.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
“A Quiet Place: Day One” ($3.0 million)
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” ($1.3 million)
“The Fabulous Four” ($1.0 million)
“Fly Me to the Moon” ($750,000)
“Raayan” ($375,000)
