The six-week abortion ban in Iowa has officially taken effect as of Monday.
This new law prohibits the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is at risk.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has praised the ban as a “victory for life” in a statement.
On the other hand, organizations like Planned Parenthood have promised to continue fighting to protect the right to choose.
Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris also spoke out against the ban when it came into effect, stating that many women may not even realize they are pregnant before the ban takes effect.
Harris further emphasized her commitment to protecting reproductive freedom when she becomes president.
Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, many Republican-led states have enacted similar laws.
Iowa has become the 22nd state to implement an abortion ban and the 18th to restrict abortions at six weeks or earlier.
