While shopping the back-to-school and end-of-summer sales, you may be overlooking a valuable savings tool that could help you save even more money, depending on where you shop.
That tool is “price matching,” but many shoppers have never taken advantage of it. Shayna Eggers, a mother of three, recently discovered that popular retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods offers price matching.
“I had no idea about that until today,” she said.
Another example is Matt Lepof, owner of Northgate Tire, who is happy to price match at his store. He believes that taking a small loss on a sale is worth it to maintain customer loyalty.
“We are happy to accommodate it, support local business, maintain customer satisfaction, and keep everything running smoothly,” he explained.

So, could you be missing out on lower prices? The nonprofit organization Consumers’ Checkbook conducted a survey on price-matching and price-adjustment policies among approximately 100 major retailers.
According to Executive Editor Kevin Brasler, “Many companies honor lower prices, but with certain conditions.”
“Often, these policies require purchase from specific named retailers and an exact match in terms of item and color,” Brasler added.
Major stores that offer price matching
The survey identified major companies that offer price matching, including:
- Best Buy
- Dick’s Sporting Goods
- Home Depot
- Kohl’s
- Lowe’s
- Office Depot
- Petsmart
- Target
Brasler noted that two major retailers, Amazon and Walmart, do not participate in price matching. However, he mentioned that if a store reduces its prices within a week of your purchase, you can request a price adjustment.
For efficient service, Brasler recommends requesting adjustments through online chat services.
One important detail to remember is that most price adjustment periods typically range from seven to 30 days, so swift action is necessary.
Delores Knott is currently considering price matching for a new living room set.
“I’m comparing prices to find the most affordable living room set,” she shared.
Therefore, it is advisable to explore price-matching options at different stores to maximize savings and avoid unnecessary expenses.
